This labeling system enhances the operational safety of chemical fume hoods while simultaneously decreasing operating costs and reducing the laboratory's carbon footprint. The design integrates a color scheme devised by the Danish Technical University in Copenhagen and incorporates text that succinctly communicates the dual benefits: "Safer - Less Energy!"

From an energy consumption perspective, the U.S. Department of Energy highlights that a standard six-foot fume hood, with an air exhaust rate of 100 linear feet per minute (LFM) and a sash opening of 18 inches, can exhaust approximately 1.5 million cubic feet of conditioned air daily. This labeling system is particularly effective when used with variable air volume (VAV) fume hood systems, especially in buildings with a high concentration of fume hoods.

The label serves as a reminder to laboratory personnel to maintain the sash door in a closed position when the hood is not in active use. This practice not only elevates safety standards within the lab environment but also contributes to significant energy savings by reducing the volume of conditioned air exhausted unnecessarily.
